Tunis , Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- The second round of Tunisian presidential elections is to be held on December 21, head of the Elections Board Chafik Sarsar announced on Monday.

Beji Caid Essebs, leader of the Nidaa Tounes party, and the incumbent Tunisian President , Moncef Marzouki, the top two vote getters in the first round, will compete in the run-off race.

Campaigning will begin on Tuesday and last until midnight on December 19, Sarsar said.

"The second round of voting is to start abroad on December 19 and continue until December 21st. Voters within Tunisia can choose Tunisia's next president on December 21st ," Sarsar said during a press conference on Monday.

"The electoral campaigns for this round will start tomorrow until December 19, and will be followed by one day of electoral silence," he added.

Also at the press conference, Sarsar announced the final results of the first round of presidential elections. Essebsi won 39.46 percent of the votes , while Marzouki came second with 33.43 percent.

Marzouki filed for an appeal against the preliminary results to the administrative court, while the latter rejected his request.

After electing the first parliament on Oct. 26, the second round of election will determine the first democratically elected president in post-revolution Tunisia, marking another milestone in the country's history.
